Accent Door
quick and easy
BEFORE AND AFTER!
We are slowly updating all of our 90’s flat panel doors throughout our house. Most of our doors are being replaced with new white doors (you can see how we do it here…$39 DIY Door Update) but for our office I wanted an accent door.
This weekend I was really in the mood for a project, but my husband…not so much. He took the night off and I completed this myself. This ended up being such a quick and easy accent door that could easily be completed in one night! Sadly though, I ran out of paint, so I had to make another trip to the store the next morning and finish up. BUT I love the results!! It’s turned out so classy yet still the dark and moody look I was hoping for in the office.
SUPPLIES NEEDED
Screwdriver
Wood Filler
Orbital Sander or Sand Paper
Spray Paint
New Hardware
FIRST STEP…
First things first, pop that door off. I simply popped the pins out of the hinges and removed the door. After the door was removed, I removed the lock, hardware, and the hinges attached to the door itself. The hardware is simple to remove and reinstall. Don’t be afraid of crazy springs or anything. It’s just removing two screws.

Second Step: Patch nail holes and sand
Next you’ll want to fill in any nail holes or dings. Especially if your changing hardware. I really feel like every wood filler isn’t created equal. This wood filler from Sherwin Williams is clean, easy to use, dries super quick and lasts FOREVER. It’s the one I always recommend. I just use my finger and rub it in any holes and dents. Next I used my orbital sander and quickly roughed the door up. Don’t worry about sanding your door down to bare bones. Just rough it up a little. Especially if it’s old. If it’s a newer door with a thick finish you might want to spend more time on this step. Otherwise this shouldn’t take more than 20 min. Here is a pic after I patched and sanded.
Third Step: Spray with Spray Paint!
For this door, I really wanted something unique. After scouring Pinterest…I just couldn’t find what I wanted. The room needed something dark but with a sheen to catch the eye. Eventually I decided to try out this Rust-eolum Metallic Universal Spray Paint in the color Flat Chestnut. I was nervous but I LOVE the way it turned out! It’s the perfect deep tone with a sheen. It doesn’t quite look like metal on this wooden door but it definitely has the accent/eye catching effect I was looking for, especially with the brass hardware. Rust-eolum has a ton of Metallic Colors to choose from. You can check all the colors out here on Amazon. There are a bunch on Amazon that I didn’t even see at the store. The Deep Navy, Guilded Brass, and Soft Iron look so fun! Seriously Metallic Deep Navy!? Im definitely going to have to try that on something!
Fourth Step: Coats
With the Rust-eolum Paint you only need to wait 30 min in between coats. Light coats are better than thick coats. You should do overlapping coats, ending each stroke off the door. Don’t start or stop on the door, start the spray first and move onto the door. I ended up doing 4 coats on the outside but only 2 on the inside of the door since this is a closet door. In total I ended up using 5 cans of spray paint.
Fifth Step: Adding HARDware
Once the paint is dry you can put your hardware back on! I went for a brass hardware to give a dark and moody feel to our office! I love how it looks paired with the Metallic Paint! Once your hardware is on you can put the door back up and insert the pins!
That’s It!! QUIck and Easy Accent DOoR!
This really is such a fun little evening project. Just a little paint and this door looks soooo much better than that orange oak! I don’t feel like I could’ve accomplished the same results with just plain old paint. I’m loving the metallic touch!
