Budget Kitchen Remodel

A Little Patience
= Huge Savings

It’s finished!! It took over a year but the diy savings was a decent annual salary!

You Guys!! It’s Done!!! Our DIY Budget Kitchen Remodel took so long but I couldn’t be any happier with the results!! Originally this was supposed to be a small kitchen update, but with every decision there were more things that couldn’t be changed later! We realized we were getting in pretty deep so we got a few quotes to see if it would be worthwhile to have some help…..quotes were so high I almost died! I’m talking 70 thousand dollars!!! This had to be a budget remodel so we decided to jump two feet in and tackle this project 100% ourselves! Im happy to report we tackled this for only $7000! A $63,000 savings! And you can too! Just takes patience! Check out these before and afters!!!

The most stressful and difficult part was the planning stage!

Details, details, details!! I can’t even say it enough. What makes or breaks a high end kitchen is the details! My hardest task in this kitchen remodel was how to get details in with my limited budget! I had to forgo those double ovens, and relocating that microwave wasn’t happening either. I needed to work with my existing cabinetry yet create a high end kitchen.

Some of my must have details were, glass cabinets, cabinets to the ceiling, open shelves, square specialty backsplash above the stove, and molding on the island and lower cabinets. So let’s dive in on how I got these things on such a small budget!

Must Haves

Open Shelving!

This is such an easy, inexpensive upgrade for a high end look! It’s so eye catching and beautiful paired with our backsplash that goes all the way to the ceiling! Before these shelves were installed I felt like our kitchen was just missing a little something! This was it! The added texture and color was just what the eye needed! We bought a beautiful piece of teak wood from a big box store and placed it in these EZYDECOR brackets from Amazon (So beautiful! However I wish they were a tad bit heavier) …and viola! Easy! I’m not gonna lie I haven’t even sanded or stained these teak wood shelves yet! They are just so pretty all on their own!!

You do lose some cabinet space but with the added cabinets to the ceiling we were great on space still! I knew I wanted to lose this wall cabinet to open up my window, but what I didn’t know was how much we would love the open counter space beneath. I use it for my crockpot, instapot, and blender. We actually added an outlet to our island but we found we use this space far more often, especially for hot items! It’s amazing how the open shelves opened up the whole kitchen!

Glass Inserts with frosted decal film from Amazon.

Cabinets to the ceiling!

I had previously seen inexpensive, small, unfinished cabinets at big box stores for a great price! $50-$65 each. I knew adding these on top of my existing cabinets would add the drama I was looking for. We removed the crown moulding carefully from our old cabinets so it could be replaced on top of these new cabinets and they would reach all the way to the ceiling.

We also decided to cut out the center of the doors to add glass. You can have glass cut for you at big box stores….for all 8 panes it was $9 dollars people!! I decided to add a frosted decal to further dress up the panes. Super easy and adds so much! I would definitely recommend this Velimax Lattice Frosted Window Film I bought on Amazon! I love the lattice pattern so much! It is great quality, so easy to install and looks so classy!

Accent Tile Backsplash

Okay we see these beautiful ranges and hoods on every single Pinterest kitchen picture we see! I wanted it all but again the price was too high and where would I put my microwave? We just couldn’t afford to reconfigure things, and replace cabinetry. This was a budget kitchen remodel!

So how do I get this beautiful accent tile backsplash above my stove? I was stumped and ready to settle for just the regular builder grade look. I mean it would still look great right!? Then, like he often does,  my husband came to the rescue! He stumbled across this new low profile microwave! It’s no cheap small microwave, it’s a beautiful new top of the line, low profile microwave! At first I was hesitant, “what if stuff doesn’t fit!?” Well I’ll tell ya, I LOVE it! We have had it over a year and I have yet to find something that doesn’t fit in it! AND I got my beautiful accent tile backsplash behind my oven!! Yay!!! We splurged a little on the tile above the stove section and the rest was a simple large subway tile that we took all the way to the ceiling and around the window. Again! Details! Paired with the shelves…It’s amazing! Tile is an inexpensive way to make big statements! What do you think?!

Custom Cabinetry and Moulding

This detail can not be overlooked. Moulding is  one of the most inexpensive details. We really wanted a custom island with all the details. We got a few quotes for ordering new island cabinets with trim work, the price is unbelievable! I couldn’t believe how much extra adding trim work to your cabinets was! It’s just a few pieces of trim! Of course we just bought some trim and slapped it on our old cabinets ourselves! On the lower cabinets and back of the island we boxed the edges. We also added legs to our island and beams that I found at a cabinet warehouse. $10 bucks each! They were old and used so we attached them and refinished them with all our old cabinets.

Lastly, we didn’t want to see a gap on the sides of the upper cabinets (where the new cabinet was sitting on top of the old cabinet). So we cut a new piece of skin that fit the length of both of them. Who knew popping out an old skin and adding a new one was such an easy thing to do. We learned a lot through the process! I didn’t even know cabinets had skin!

So what do you think?! Can you see a budget kitchen remodel in your future!  I wasn’t sure we could do it but with a little patience and determination we accomplished the impossible!! Now lets check out some more before and after pics!!

It’s Going to be Perfect!
