DIY Door Makeover only $39!
When we moved into this house the doors were killing me! 90’s flat panel hollow core doors! Why?! Seriously even 18 years ago….why?! Top it off with that beautiful (ah hem awful) honey oak color and these doors just had to go! However, I was so disappointed after I checked out door prices and found the doors I wanted would cost around $90 each from big box stores! We have over 20 doors in this house and I knew it’d be awhile before we would have $1800 for just the doors! Likewise, the trim was equally as expensive! So I set out on a mission to find the same doors with a better price and you can too! Here is the breakdown for $39 door and trim! $39 DIY Door Cost Breakdown……
Trim Header 6″x1″x16′ : BMC $16 for 16 ft. (will do 4 doors.) TOTAL: $4
Trim Casings 3.5″x 11/16″ x 7′: BMC $6 (x2) TOTAL:$12
Header Moulding: Sanded and Repurposed old trim! TOTAL: FREE
Header Top Cap 5″ x 9/16″X 16′: BMC $16 for 16 ft ripped in half (will do 8 doors) TOTAL: $2
Paneled Door : Door Warehouse/ Distributor TOTAL : $20
Sandpaper: $5.20 for 5 (use 1 piece) TOTAL: $1
GRAND TOTAL: $39!!!

The biggest money saving secret is to research and use local moulding stores! They sell the same exact products at a fraction of the price! So give it a google, you will be shocked at how many are around. Take some time and find the exact trim/base/casing number that you like (even ones from big box stores) and call a few stores and ask for prices for that exact brand and number. You will be shocked how much prices fluctuate. I was originally quoted $2.25 ln/ft….. However, I got them for .89 ln/ft! THIS IS A HUGE SAVINGS FOR THE EXACT SAME PRODUCT!
Moulding stores also have discounts on doors. If your looking for the deepest discounts, like I was, find where the big stores send doors that were overstocked, or special ordered, or didn’t sell. Check out facebook marketplace or craigslist, warehouses might list products here. This is how we stumbled upon a door warehouse downtown that had thousands of doors. 6 stories of them actually! These were the exact same doors we could order from Big box stores. We bought all they had, that matched, and will order the rest…we were only 1 short!
